The conversion rules for youth football still award two points for kicks and one for rushes/catches. Ryan Moore deserved at least 10. When the LQs scored their third TD with 0:35 seconds remaining in the first half, on a 4-yard run by Josh Barlow, coach Chris Rahill, of Penn Charter offensive coordinating fame, decided to go for one. Moore, the QB, maneuvered to the right side on a keeper and, pow!, got absolutely plastered not far from the goal line. If the play had happened in the NFL, it would be the talk of the nation Monday. Moore did not wilt, however. In fact, he regrouped and made his way into the end zone. Beyond the field, track and railing stood a group of observers. One immediately yelled, “I like that, 8!” (That’s Moore’s number.) Shortly thereafter, this comment came booming out from the same area: “You made my day, No. 8! . . . I don’t need anything else!” Hopefully, Ryan heard the fan. Because he truly deserved the praise. It was the ultimate hang-tough, still-get-the-job-done moment. This game, which opened season No. 65, went rather well for the LQs. The offense clicked early and (somewhat) often and the defense kept the Sharks pretty much in neutral. A TFL by Keino Salmon helped to limit the Sharks to a three-and-out on the game’s first possession. Starting at their 27, the LQs needed nine plays to post a six-pointer on a 1-yard run by Sam Brown. Brown carried six times on this possession and, folks, he has The Look. He’s kinda tall/definitely speedy and owns the gait of someone who will someday triple jump 45 feet and/or be able to dunk while standing still. Maybe on an 11-foot basket (smile). In all, he rushed 11 times for 88 yards and lost an impressive 45-yard TD to a holding call. Barlow, who stirred thoughts of Darren Sproles, carried 10 times for 64 yards. The other TD went to Akire Lilley (5-18) on a 4-yard run. The starting grunts were C Nick Marricone, Gs Donald Lattanze and Drew Meyers and Ts Ty Needham and Anthony Moorehead. Many defenders made contributions and they’re detailed below in the breakdown. The Sharks, who had problems with penalties, netted more than eight yards on just one play. In the waning moments, Terrell Barr passed to a leaping Travon Miner for a 34-yard gain. Among the LQs is Ed Guarnaccia. His dad, Ed, was a productive rusher/blocker, out of a Wishbone formation, for Wood’s 1974 Catholic and City champs. Next week the LQs will make their annual visit to Franklin Field.
